In this quick how-to, we’ll show you how to make a pompom for a hat, or something else that needs an extra pouf – fx wreaths, blankets or a bookmark.
Pompoms can be used for different purposes – like hats (see fx our free knitting pattern for a winter hat right here), tassels on pillows, bookmarks and much more. Only your imagination sets the limit!
you can make pompoms from leftover yarn from the projects you’ve done – that’s why we’ve always got a little extra leftover yarn lying around everywhere 🙂 Even the smallest ball of yarn can become a pom pom.
How to make a pompom

Twist the yarn around a fork – the more yarn you use, the bigger the pompom.

Grab a piece of yarn and bind it around the middle of the twisted yarn. Tighten and take the yarn off the fork.

Cut the sides of the twisted yarn, and pouf the pompom so it pops!
A lot of tool can be used to make pompoms when you don’t have actual pompom makers. You can twist the yarn around two or more fingers, a wooden spoon, piece of cardboard and much more.
